Pied Stilt Vineyard is located on the Lower Moutere Plains near Motueka, about 45 minutes drive from Nelson City - at the top of the South Island. The climate here is ideal for wine grape production. The region has daily coastal sea breezes and Motueka has among the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand.

Great wine starts in the vineyard, with growing premium quality grapes. Being a smaller operation (12 hectares), the family does nearly all the vineyard work. Many hours are involved in tending the vines throughout the year to ensure that high quality grapes are produced. Our family has a passion for producing quality wine - a dream that was started over a decade ago when we moved to this region.

The vineyard was named Pied Stilt due to its close proximity to the Motueka Sandspit - an internationally known area for wading birds. The elegant Pied Stilt (Poaka) with its distinctive black and white plumage and pinkish-red legs is a frequent visitor to this reqion.

"Pied Stilt 2009 Pinot Gris ($16.95 and widely available) Initial aromas of apples and pears open up to include spiced quince tones. The medium weight palate has a mineral backbone, is fruity without being a "fruit bomb" and eases into a soft citrus finish. A beautifully crafted wine that is perfect with sweet Nelson scallops."
